Mentoring

The transitions of life, specifically from high school to post-secondary education to professional pursuits are a journey of challenges, growth, discovery and success.  According to the National Center for Education Statistics of the U.S. Department of Education, students who received mentoring from advisors regularly during their freshmen year had 170% greater chance of completing their bachelor’s degree than those that did not.  If you are between the ages of 15 to 25 and would like a mentor to assist you with developing goals, providing advice, and support toward your personal, academic and professional success, complete the Mentor Request Form. 

Mentoring is facilitated through face-to-face meetings and electronic communications such as Facebook, Skype, Kik, email and telephone.

Purpose

The purpose of the mentor relationship is to support, nurture, and guide and facilitate the realization of a dream by providing students with structured one-on-one attention, support, encouragement, advice in addition to providing an avenue for networking.

What is a Mentor?

A mentor is a trusted friend, counselor and guide.  Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support, encouragement and information aimed at helping the mentee develop the competence and character needed for personal, academic, and professional success.

Nationally, an astonishing 51% of college students fail to graduate within six years according to the 2009 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudial Report by National Center for Education Statistics of the U.S. Department of Education. Moreover, 4 out of 5 low-income college students fail to attain a bachelor’s degree by their mid-20s as reported in the Family Income & Educational Attainment Report by N. Brunt, C. Stocker & T. Mortenson.  According to Reclaiming the American Dream, a study commissioned by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, found that, “a student who makes the connection between obtaining a college degree and his or her career goals is six times as likely to attain a degree as one who does not” which is the single largest factor on an individual student’s likelihood of completing college. Today’s students face ever-increasing tuition costs and uncertain post-graduation employment prospects. By connecting with professionals who provide advice regarding how a college major will lead to a successful career, students can begin to understand the value [or benefit] of earning a college degree.

Support Services of a Mentor

As your mentor, DeWarren K. Langley will be available to provide the following support services:

Success in life is a road trip.  Now is the time for you to set the direction that will lead you to achieving your goals, thus the importance of mentoring to assist you with defining your goals, identifying the action steps you will take to achieve your goals and constantly evaluating the decisions you make to ensure they coincide with your goals.  The action steps provide clarity to the process for achieving your goals.

Decisions are not made in isolation! The choices you make today, will impact your tomorrow. Where are the choices you are making today leading your life? Are those decisions connected to your long term goals? If not, re-evaluate and make corrective measures! You only have one life to live and no need in making unnecessary poor decisions that take you off the course to your dreams!

Please be mindful of the choices you make and remember this is your choices are your investment in the outcomes of your life.  Make the most of it.

Confidentiality

All issues written and discussed through mentoring will be kept confidential unless the student is being harmed, considering harm to another person or knows of a person being harmed.  For students between the ages of 15 to 17 years old, confidentiality is limited.  All communications will be shared with parents on regular bases.
